A Friendly Reminder to Iowa Shoppers This Holiday Season ( News Iowa )

We firmly believe that everyone should work in the industry at some point in their lives either in retail or food service. I think it gives you a greater appreciation for the people who do those things, which in turn makes you a little kinder.

I spent my first year in the workforce as a crew member Stone Cold Creamery When I was 16, I finally went to a large grocery chain (Kruger). I spent the first year there as a fodder and cart pusher before being transferred to the department, and that’s where I spent the next 3 years. While I was there, I got a second job in retail eternal 21. I continued there for about four years until moving to Iowa again in 2014.

I spent almost all of Thanksgiving at the grocery store and every Black Friday and the day after Christmas on Forever 21, and I can say that the holiday season is a tough time to work in customer service. People seem to be a bit more stressed and a lot less patient. I understand when it’s ‘really busy’ it’s easy to get frustrated, but please remember: most of the time, employees are doing the best they can. There are people. Sometimes they make mistakes. Sometimes things don’t go as planned or move as fast as they should. But you know what doesn’t help? They were crying before everyone. I put them at a disadvantage before trusting them and their other customers. Especially when it comes to something that is out of their control. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been contacted for our store exchange plan by people sending back unwanted birthday gifts. I always thought in my head; “Sir/Madam, I’m making minimum wage. Crying out wrong.”

Basically, I just want to send a little love to all the retail workers and food service workers who are busy with another crazy holiday season. Please know that many of us have done what you are capable of and understand what you are about to do. I hope people are kind and respectful and can make it through the season as little as possible! Well done!
